Into The Woods
04:07
|
|||
Got a wolf-stone in my pocket
Into, into the woods we go
And the rain pissed out our bonfire
Into, into the woods we go
We forgot the things we learned at home
Into, into the woods we go
And boys, there is no turning back
Into, into the woods we go
Oh sweetheart, oh lover
Oh darling, give me trust
There’s nothing in the forest gonna fuck with us
Oh sweetheart oh lover
The gorse got hold
The gorse got hold again
The warming rooms are far behind
Into, into the woods we go
A branch in every spoke and wheel
Into, into the woods we go
One step forward, one step back
Into, into the woods we go
And boys there is no turning back
Into, into the woods we go
Chorus
Got a wolf-stone in my pocket
Into, into the woods we go
And my fingers close upon it
Into, into the woods we go
Skin will tighten, skin will crack
Into, into the woods we go
We’ll leave our clothes right where they fall
Into, into the woods we go
Our books are burned upon the ground
Into, into the woods we go
And boys, there is no hiding now
Oh sweetheart, oh lover
Oh darling, give me trust
There’s nothing in the forest gonna fuck with us
Because the branches got thicker
The gorse got hold
And men will be beasts again

Hob Hole Hob

Hob Hole Hob
Hob Hole Hob
Me bairn’s got y’kink cough
Tak it off
Woman I admire your courage
You clearly love your son more than a fisherman could
Lay the lad down, I’ll clean those dirty lungs
Fix percussive pertussis with seaweed and driftwood
Hob Hole Hob
Hob Hole Hob
You did a fine job at clearing that old kink cough
Hob Hole Hob
Hob Hole Hob
Don’t follow me home won’t you please take off
Woman this house is inviting
I’m gonna rattle some cages, bother your dog
Buy me a suit and I’ll be on my way
I’ll be the best dressed boggart in Runswick Bay
Hob Hole Hob
Hob Hole Hob
In your three piece suit you look greater than God
Hob Hole Hob
Hob Hole Hob
Back to your hole, cure some other poor sod

The Beasts
05:10
|
|||
Gorse-tangled in our ancestral pile
Oh brother and I
Two mollusks in one shell
No evening callers for six long years
No offspring or soft wives
Just our shared hours
Oh brother we set off to hunt
Our horses feagued to make them spry
Although for want we did the task with our own hands
The locals spread word of our ride
Then bolted doors and shooed the docile cows inside
And you always the keener eye
Saw branches stir and shot your load towards the shade
A fine report it fell in one
We closed to get the fox that tore our chickens’ throats
So throw the carcass in the bag
Our prayers were never clean
A hopeless heart's a heavy anchor
Over the pathless seas
And we will never claim your love
And so it’s off to hunt once more
So newly feagued and pissed as hell
We rode bravely across the fell
Like men we were…like greater men we were before
A scent and a nose in the air
A quickening of hoof and of hand
The next was mine…and just like you I hit the mark
The mastiff ran forward to find
An otter with dark and damp pelt
A kill no good but for the hungry dogs sat by
So throw the carcass in the bag
Our prayers were never clean
A hopeless heart's a heavy anchor
Over the pathless seas
And we will never claim your love
And so it’s off to hunt once more
“Fuck this” you said and cocked your rifle clumsily
Before I could find voice you shot the mastiff up its arse
It fell at once
And laughing beyond care we dragged the sorry trio home
Tied up with sodden rags
Draped over braying horse
And when we both were home
Surrounded by our prey
With needles, thread and butcher knives
…They called us the beasts of Acklam
Well our heraldry is rusty
But we’ll give them a sigil worth the name.
I read a book when I was young
About a mammal with a beak
They said it had been made by men
And anything can be done by men
And everything will be done by men
There’s nothing won’t be done by men
So call the papers in and
Oh brother, we’ll hit the wine again.

Oil & Diamonds
04:45
|
|||
He was in oil and she was in diamonds
“Let’s drink to evil” they clinked as the sun slowly dipped its head below the peaks
And a warm breeze blanketed and separated them from the rest of the quiet rooftop bar
Scattered islands of humanity encircled by keen-eyed early-season waitresses
Who scanned the aisles and rictused for tips
They ate dirty rice without embarrassment
Chased lonely grains around checked placemats
Ordered drinks for each other with varying degrees of success
A vodka tabasco concoction and something with absinthe
The ice broke as quickly as it does with strangers in strange towns
And they laid out their hurts like tarnished cutlery on the table in front of them
And new words came out
And fresh drinks arrived
As the darkness stole across the street
Closing time they stumbled down to Main Street and were swept up in the evening crowd
A tide surging later into Saturday night
They circled around the obvious for all of five seconds
As a ring of tanked-up teens circled them like a centrifuge
Cheering them on before staggering towards the sounds nearby
They pushed through the throng enfolded and protected in their own two-scene
Before breaking onto the quiet bridge that led out of town
He walked her home, higher into the mountains
And they stopped at every perfect corner
An unforgiving morning came to a condo under the peaks
And numbers sank into the recesses of a pocket and a purse
Stepping stones are no use underwater
Oil & Diamonds they’d said
This one’s for evil

Avenge!
02:54
|
|||
If you are savaged or if you are scotched
I will avenge your death
And if - of vital forces - you are swiftly dispossessed
I will avenge your death
‘Cos that’s what lovers do
I would expect no less from you
That’s what lovers do
And if you are brought up for public display
I will avenge your death
If are you thrown to the lions or wolves
I will avenge your death
Chorus
But if they undo you in subtler ways
You’re left in the woods
With a gun and a spade
If your eyes harden, or if your heart calcifies
I will avenge your death
‘Cos that’s what lovers do
I would expect no less from you
That’s what lovers do

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
Only for nights in Ballygrand
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
And neither have I the wings to fly
If I could find me boatman
To ferry me over my love and I
My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy times there spent so long ago
My boyhood friends and my own relations
Have all passed on now like melting snow
So I'll spend my days in this endless roving
Soft is the grass and shore, my bed is free
Oh to be home now in Carrickfergus
On the long road down to the salty sea
And in Kilkenny it is reported
On marble stone there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her
But I'll sing no more now ‘til I get a drink
For I’m drunk today and I'm seldom sober
A handsome rover from town to town
Ah but I'm sick now and my days are numbered
Come all ye young men and lay me down
Come all ye young men and lay me down.
